QUEER TALK

New equality law – and now what?

Basel-Stadt is the first canton in German-speaking part of Switzerland to introduce a new equality law that also includes queer people. The cantonal parliament approved this with a clear majority back in January – it will be introduced in the coming months. But what does this mean for the LGBTQIA+ community in Basel? And why should we all care about the new law?

We invite you to a discussion with political companions and representatives of local LGBTQIA+ organizations about the needs, wishes and hopes in connection with the new law.

Podium:
Barbara Heer (Grossrätin SP & Präsidentin JSSK – she)
Evelyne Sturm (Leiterin Fachstelle Gleichstellung – she)
Elisha Schneider (queerAltern – none)
Leo Theissing (TINQ-Café / Wissenschaftler*in – dey)

Moderation:
Freija Geniale (she)
Samson Rentsch (none/he)

Free entry & seat reservation.

The event will be held in High German and unfortunately cannot be translated into sign language.

Speakers (confirmed)

Conradin Cramer has been a member of the Cantonal Government of Basel-Stadt since 2017, President of the Government and Head of the Presidential Department since 2024.

Photo: Andi Cortellini

Grossrätin Basel-Stadt

I was born and raised in Basel in 1978, the daughter of Kurdish-Alevi immigrants, and spent my school years here. I have been active for the SP in the Grand Council since 2015 and have also been a member of the Riehen Residents’ Council since 2022. Professionally, I am a business economist and head of corporate development at the Basler Verkehrsbetriebe (BVB). In addition to my professional and political activities, I am the mother of a 12-year-old son.

Frank Lorenz (born 1965) is a Christian pastor, (emergency) counselor and director of the first rainbow church in Switzerland, the “Open Church Elisabethen” (above the theater Basel).

In a previous life, he was a paramedic. As a theology student, he set up the “Rainbowline” (counseling hotline 0848 80 50 80) and cared for terminal AIDS patients at the “Basel Lighthouse”.

Before his active service in the Swiss army in a medical company that supported the cantonal hospital during the pandemic, he entered into a “covenant for life” with the Basel Germanist and historian Martin Schilling (at that time still called a “civil partnership”).

Through counseling (pastoral care) and rituals (church services, blessings), he wants to show that Judeo-Christian theology can make people a better version of themselves. And after a fulfilled life, they should be able to enter a loving eternity without fear.

Ali Raza Khan is a young HIV positive gay refugee and activist from Pakistan working for his community since 2015, focused on sexual reproductive health and rights, HIV, AIDS prevention and peace building focused around gay and queer community.

He has worked with multiple local, national & international organizations for the rights of gay people living with HIV and other HIV vulnerable communities.

He is currently leading Pride Pakistan campaign and network working for LGBTQI+ community rights and empowerment of Pakistani origin.

He is serving as member Communities’ Delegation to the board of the Global Fund for HIV, TB and Malaria and Co-lead in The Youth PACT both working at global level to prevent HIV and AIDS in gay and other vulnerable key populations.

He has been awarded with Youth Leadership Award 2021 and HIV HERO Award 2021 by APCOM for his work for SRHR and HIV for gay community.

Transophonix accompany the Pride Walk

Transophonix is the queer brass band of the heart from Berlin. They love brass music and are currently 13 passionate musicians. They spread joie de vivre with music – they don’t need traditional gender roles or social images to do so!

They live the diversity of queer identities and make them visible and audible in order to help combat discrimination against lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans* and queer people.

On Saturday, June 29, 2024, let’s advocate for the visibility of the LGBTQIA+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, Asexual, Non-Binary) community.

Let’s be loud, inspire each other, dance together and advocate for more queer visibility. Let’s be strong together and stand up for a society where love is seen for what it is: love!

So grab your Pride flags, mount your pins and create your signs. Let’s be visible together and make Basel more colorful!

Liestal Pride Demo
Additional to the Basel Pride Walk the first Pride Demo will take place in Liestal (Basel-Country) at 13:00. This will be followed by the Basel Pride Walk. More information about the meeting point and route can be found here.
